COURSE OUTCOME : ENGLISH HONOURS
COURSE 1 : ENGLISH LANGUAGE: OVERVIEW & USAGE, LITERARY TYPES
After completion of the course, the students will be able to
- Understand the history of English language in terms of its origin and growth.
- Identify the various functions a language performs and the roles assigned to it.
- Recognize the existence of English language in the forms of dialects based on a set of established factors.
- Identify various forms of literary types that will lead to a better understanding of literature.
COURSE 2 : EUROPEAN CLASSICAL LITERATURE
After completion of the course, the students will be able to
- Understand classical European , i.e. Greek and Latin literary culture and their socio-political -cultural contexts.
- Grasp the evolution of the concept of classic and classical in the European literary thinking and its reception over a period of time.
- Examine different ways of reading and using literary texts across a wide range of classical authors, genres and periods with comparative perspectives.
- Develop human and literary values of classical period and also enhance their interest in it.
COURSE 3 : INDIAN CLASSICAL LITERATURE & INDIAN WRITING IN
ENGLISH
After completion of the course, students will be able to
- Explain the socio – political – cultural background of the age that produced Indian classical literature from its beginning till 1100 AD.
- Appreciate the pluralistic and inclusive nature of Indian classical literature and its attributes.
- Understand , analyse and trace the evolution of classical literature, written mainly in Sanskrit, Tamil, Prakrit and Pali languages from comparative perspective.
- Critically appreciate the creative use of English language in Indian Writing.
- Understand the inclusive nature of literature as Indian Writing in English covers multiple texts from different historical and geographical locations.
COURSE 4 : BRITISH LITERATURE: OLD ENGLISH PERIOD TO 14 TH CENTURY
After completion of the course, students will be able to
- Trace the history of English literature from old English period.
- Identify the transformation of language, style, themes reflected in the literary texts from Old English to Middle English period.
- Understand how the historical and political trajectories are related to the literature of these periods.
COURSE 5: AMERICAN LITERATURE
After completion of the course, students will be able to
- Understand the depth and diversity of American literature, including the history and culture of the United States of America from the colonial period to the present.
- Critically engage with the idea of democracy, the Myth of success, the American Adam, multiculturalism etc.
- Relate the African American experience in America and analyse the American mind from global perspective.
COURSE 6: BRITISH POETRY & DRAMA – 14TH AND 17TH CENTURIES
After completion of the course, it will be possible for the students to
- Understand the tradition of English literature from 14th to 17th centuries.
- Appreciate and analyse the selected texts in the larger socio-political contexts of the time.
- Engage with the major genres and forms of English literature and develop fundamental skills required for close reading and critical thinking of the texts and concepts.
COURSE 7: BRITISH POETRY & DRAMA – 17TH AND 18TH CENTURIES
After successful completion of the course, learners will be able to
- Identify the major characteristics of the comedy of manners and mock- heroic poetry.
- Examine the key themes in the selected texts of the periods including sin, love, revenge, sexuality and others.
- Demonstrate in depth knowledge of the religious , socio-intellectual thoughts of the 17th and 18th centuries.
COURSE 8: BRITISH LITERATURE – 18TH CENTURY
After completion of the course, students will be able to
- Trace the development of Restoration Comedy and anti-sentimental drama.
- Map the relationship between literature and politics in the neo-classical period.
- Appreciate the formal variations of classicism.
- Explain and analyse the evolution of the critical mind
COURSE 9: BRITISH ROMANTIC LITERATURE
After completion of this course students will be able to
- Follow the concept and significance of nature in romantic poetry.
- Know the presence of Gothic element in romantic literature.
- Understand how to distinguish between reason and inspiration in romantic literature.
- Understand the spiritual interpretation of nature and power.
COURSE 10: BRITISH LITERATURE 19TH CENTURY
After completion of this course students will be able to…..
- Critically analyze 19th century British literature.
- Develop a reading habit of 19th century British literature.
- Familiar with the creative skills and critical thinking skills of the 19th century British writers.
- Become more sensitive and aware of social issues and learn about different interpretative techniques.
COURSE 11: WOMEN’S WRITING
After completion of this course students will be able to
- Know about women writers of different ages.
- Study and understand about feminine texts and can differentiate between sex & gender.
- Consciously understand the issues, problems and concerns of women writers of different countries.
COURSE 12: BRITISH LITERATURE – THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY
After completing this course students will be able to
- Understand the aspects of British literature (The Early 20th Century).
- Identify and describe distinct literary characteristics of British literature from beginning till the 20th century.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the history of culture of the early 20th century British literature.
- Read and interpret representative writings of the 20th century.
COURSE 13: MODERN EUROPEAN DRAMA
After completion of this course students will be able to
- Familiarize themselves with the tradition of modern European drama.
- Understand the concept of Absurd drama and its development.
- Learn about the socio – political changes and the element of realism in modern European drama.
- Make a comparative study of traditional drama and absurd drama.
COURSE 14: POSTCOLONIAL LITERATURE
After completion of this course learners will be able to
- Gain knowledge about the terms and concepts of the post–colonial literature.
- Find out the history of post–colonial movement in India and its textual representations.
- Familiarize themselves with the development of post–colonial literature.
- Know how a text reveals about the politics of anti–colonialist resistance.
